- the Communist Party USA

- Moammar Qaddafi
- Hugo Chavez; and

...just to name a few.

That I live among so many "Americans" who CAN is not just disconcerting, it's frightening...

"Spread the wealth" -- Republicans are basing everything they say on that phrase. Thing is, I know plenty of people who have busted their backsides for the last eight years and have been hurt terribly by Bush's policies. Sure, you'll find some free-loaders everywhere, but if you show me someone who thinks that a yearly salary below $100,000 is the result of terminal laziness, I'll show you someone who is probably wrong.

Lots of my right-wing buddies are under the sad impression that they rank among the nation's top one-percent of income earners. Thus, they roll out the tired "socialist" argument. These friends of mine make as much as I do, and I'm no millionaire. The one thing we all agree on is that we all bust our tails, day in and day out.

In other news, Palin thinks she's going to be in charge of Congress -- and this is the same one that wants to mix it up with her next-door neighbor, Putin, just because. Last I checked, we do still have to share this planet with other -- some might derisively say, "foreign" -- entities. Do whatever covert intelligence you have to, if it means keeping as many people safe as can possibly be achieved, but to instigate conflict where conflict wasn't already present will only hurt our nation's citizens later, militarily or economically. Thanks for that, Sarah.

There is a school of thought that the nomination of John McCain -- no favorite of the Republicans -- and his selection of the Alaskan puppet with the funny accent as his running mate are GOP tactics to let the Democrats have this next term and do their worst to clean up what Bush and Cheney have so severely fouled up. I wouldn't dismiss that notion so quickly.

Look, there is no perfect candidate. Maybe there never will be. But if this country is willing to take a flier on George W. Bush -- twice -- then why not let Obama put his money where his mouth is. Let's see what this guy can do.

Right now, my country is careening wildly in reverse. If, in the next four years, Barack Obama can manage to slow this metaphorical car of ours into neutral, much less get it to move forward . . . frankly, I'll be impressed.

However, for me, it comes down to a definition of "those who are deserving". When it comes to my personal donations and philanthrpoical dollars, I'd rather make those decisions myself, and not have someone in Washingtom decide who is "deserving". Deomcratic or Republican run, our gov't has yet to prove it can successfully create programs that "spread wealth" fairly, judiciously or effectively.

One of the things that makes this country great is the fact that we look out for one another. Remmeber "give us your poor, your hungry, your tried...". If that means those of us who are fortunate enough to have a little more share with those who have a little less, so be it. Your statement that all those who are going to benefit from this sharing are "lazy and free-riders" is embrassing. If a insignificant percentage of those who are helped fit your description benefit so that the remaining, who are deserving, receive a benefit is a small price to pay. Just like the legal system; it is far better to let a guilty person go free than to punish and innocent one.

re: Really America? Seems to me that our greed and neverending pursuit of life as Americans sometimes makes us blind to our past history and what got us to where we are today. It's always good to reflect upon and apprceiate our past.

We have been critical of so many nation's polities towards indigenous populations (China, Turkey, Russia, Australia to name a few) yet we so completely fail to consider our own treatment of native Americans in the same light.

Kudos for educating your son about the proper traditions and culture of indigenous American people. We all must continue to take the necessary steps towards cultural enlightenment.

1. parents who let their kids run for a 1/4 mile (ok slight exaggeration) in either direction to take every piece of candy in the area. Menomonee Falls almost had a kid run over by one of the "boats" because the kid was literally in the middle of the parade route getting candy.
2. People just throwing out candy out of the back. Make people who hand out candy to "hand out" candy to people, not just throw it out of the back of their car

re: 20 Questions

I have another question for you to ask...
Why, when the voters of Germantown have already voted against building a new school, does the School Board feel the need to try and push a new school referendum through again in November to build another school at the cost of $200.00 a square foot?! There are other communities that have built schools for half that cost! While I agree that something needs to be done, I feel that the school board needs to take a close
look at the amount of money that they are asking for. They do not even have money budgeted for road improvements that will be needed, the cost for that needs to be taken into acount as well, that is not free.
I am outraged that the School Board would actually ask for the same amount of money again.

For what it's worth, our phones at work display display the time and automatically change with daylight savings, but they are still set for the OLD daylight savings so they changed last weekend. For the past week I've been looking at my phone thinking it was one hour earlier than it really was. Not too bad when it's 5 p.m. and I think it's only 4 p.m., but hard to adjust when I think I have an hour to prepare for a meeting that is starting NOW.
